O’Bannon Prevails Over NCAA

ObannonnetFriday afternoon proved to be an important day in sports law, as U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled in favor of the class of plaintiffs led by former UCLA star Ed O’Bannon.  In short, Judge Wilken held that the NCAA must eliminate its rules that prohibit college athletes from receiving compensation for commercial use of their names, images and likenesses.  There will likely be an appeal and the victory is far more limited than what the players initially sought.  However, this decision is a significant victory for players and will likely play a large role in reshaping college sports.

ESPN’s Lester Munson has a great Q&A on the decision.

SI.com’s Mike McCann also has an excellent piece on the O’Bannon case.
