I am sad to pass along the news that Dave O’Brien, Director of the Sport Management Program at Drexel University, lawyer and former Division I athletic director, passed away on March 1. Dave had a resume that most lawyers can only dream of. Before going to Drexel, Dave was an Athletic Director at Long Beach State University, Temple University and Northeastern University.
In the summer of 2012, Dave invited me to speak to his sports law class at Drexel about coaching contracts. Although I felt some apprehension about lecturing on coaching contracts to a lawyer and former Athletic Director, I accepted. Upon meeting Dave, he immediately made me feel like we were old friends. I asked him to add some anecdotes to my presentation and although he was quiet for most the of time, his contributions were incredibly enlightening. I have never had more fun presenting.
Dave was one of the kindest, smartest and most accomplished people that I have met in the industry. I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends.
