Major League Soccer’s Soccer Night in Newtown was an outstanding example of how sports can bring some temporary relief from the tragedies that occurred last month in Newtown, Connecticut.
On Sunday, Fairfield University quietly organized Newtown Day at its men’s basketball game at Webster Arena. More than 300 children attended and participated in events surrounding the game: children from Newtown stood on the court with the players during the national anthem; lined up to give the players high-fives; participated in games of skill during time-outs; helped clean the floor during time-outs; and assisted the cheering squad.
John Burgeson of the Connecticut Post has the story on Newtown Day at Fairfield University. Congratulations to Fairfield University for putting together an excellent event for the children of Newtown, in particular Helen Smaldone and Pat Murphy of Fairfield’s athletic department, who conceived of and planned the event. Fairfield is planning an all-sports clinic for Newtown children in the spring.
