UConn QB Box to Transfer

Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant has the story on UConn quarterback Michael Box, who has decided to transfer.  Box, who was recently relegated to the running the scout team, reportedly is considering 1-AA schools such as Richmond, Delaware, Coastal Carolina and James Madison. 

He should be eligible to play immediately by taking advantage of the NCAA’s one-time transfer exception.

Youth Sports and Elite Teams

Tim Keown of has a great article on youth sports, in particular “select”, “elite” and “travel” teams.  Here’s an excerpt:

The days of simply playing ball with your friends is over. It’s a different world out there for the preteen athlete, with “Elite” and “Select” commonly turning up in the names of our youth sports teams and leagues. We’re having tryouts for 10-and-under traveling baseball teams, and we’ve got 10-and-under basketball teams traveling the country playing against other fourth-graders at God knows what cost to the parents’ bank accounts and the kids’ psyches. All in the name of … what? Trophies? Exposure? A leg up on a college scholarship? The egos of the parents?

Fantasy Sports and the Law

Marc Edelman of the Sports Law Blog has posted some highlights from his article  A Short Treatise on Fantasy Sports and the Law: How America Regulates it New National Pastime.  The article will be published in the upcoming edition of the Harvard Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law.
