Wednesday is National Signing Day in college football: an opportunity for high school football players and universities to commit to each other. Although National Signing Day is an exciting day for players and universities alike, legal issues abound. At the center of these legal issues is the National Letter of Intent (NLI). There is a legal question often discussed in Sports Law courses as to whether the NLI is a legally enforceable agreement. But there are also many more practical issues facing players: there are issues for players under the age of 18; players dealing with schools facing NCAA sanctions; players recruited by coaches who seek greener pastures; and issues for elite recruits, to name a few.
