The Colonial Column: Colonials in the Community

By Dan Canavan

Prior to the season, the Hartford Colonials made an organizational commitment to supporting local nonprofit organizations.  Upon his signing with the Colonials, Quarterback Josh McCown generously agreed to donate $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford.

But the team’s generosity hasn’t been limited to financial support. On September 3rd, McCown and teammates spent the afternoon with members of the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.  The Colonials also volunteered to assist on at the annual 102.9 DRC-FM Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon.  Ten players answered phones during the radiothon, and visited with patients at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.  Defensive Back Tra Battle has announced his commitment to the community with “Tra’s Battle for Success Foundation,” which focuses on assisting youth organizations.

Even during their bye-week, the Colonials continued to raise the team’s profile in the greater Hartford community.  On September 28th, the Colonials helped the Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. kick off its United Way campaign. University of Connecticut stand out Andre Dixon, along with Ryan Glasper, Frantz Joseph, Taylor Mehlhaff, Ryan Palmer, Asaph Schwapp and Kyle Whitehurst attended the event which was held in Simsbury.  The players met with sponsors and employees, and signed autographs.
