University of Connecticut standout Andre Dixon will have a little more competition in the backfield when the UFL’s Hartford Colonials return from their bye week. On Monday, the Colonials announced their signing of former NFL running back Kevin Jones.
Jones, drafted in the first-round of the NFL by Detroit in 2004, has rushed for 3,176 yards and 24 touchdowns in 68 games with the Lions and Chicago Bears. After coming out of Virginia Tech, Jones played in 64 games over the course of five NFL seasons. In 2004 he had 1,133 yards rushing to become just the third rookie in Lions history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark, joining Barry Sanders and Billy Sims. Jones was sidelined with an ankle injury last season.
The Colonials also added defensive back Gerard Lawson to the roster. Lawson made his NFL debut in 2008, appearing in 20 games over the course of two NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
The Colonials return to action with Jones and Lawson on Saturday, October 19th, when they host Brooks Bollinger and the Florida Tuskers at Rentschler Field.
