An errant behind-the-back dog toss by Slugger, the Kansas City Royals mascot, during a game last fall has provided the fodder for a personal injury lawsuit. Plaintiff John Coomer claims that he suffered injuries to his eye after being struck with a hot dog of course. A few notes on the lawsuit, and perhaps this emerging area of tort law:
- Michael McCann provides solid legal commentary over on the TortsProf Blog, touching upon game presentation and entertainment.
- Mascot torts are not as uncommon as they appear. The Chicago Bulls were sued after Benny, their mascot, engaged in an overly aggressive high-five.
- Jason Wolf, over on the Sports Agent & Sports Lawyer Blog, writes about a New Jersey man who sued a minor league baseball team after suffering an injury in a three-legged race. Not a mascot issue, but a game presentation and entertainment issue as touched upon by McCann.
