Connecticut 6 Classic: State’s Midmajors Seek Basketball Spotlight

FairfieldA brand new, seasoning-opening college basketball tournament is coming to Connecticut this fall.  The Connecticut 6 Classic was announced yesterday, and is drawing attention as much for the six involved schools – Quinnipiac, Fairfield, Yale, Hartford, Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart – as the school that has been left out – UConn.

The exclusion of UConn not only levels the playing field, but encourages the growth of college basketball in Connecticut beyond Jim Calhoun and the Huskies.  The New Haven Register’s Dave Solomon quoted Fairfield Coach Ed Cooley as follows:

UConn is really in a basket by itself in our state.  They’ve earned all the respect, and quite frankly, this is not a stage they should be on.  They’ve earned a different stage. If we want to get our programs to that level, we have to do what they’ve done. I think there’s an opportunity for the mid-majors to have a great night in one building, a lot of fans and hopefully a great atmosphere…

UConn and Jim Calhoun have created an outstanding basketball culture in this state.   Starting with the Connecticut 6 Classic, let’s see if the other basketball programs can tap into this culture and generate increased interest for their respective schools.
