Win-loss record, conference record, out-of-conference schedule, bowl appearances, and recruiting: just a few  measures of a collegiate football program.  But what about the number of players that the program sends to the NFL?  When a program takes fairly unheralded recruits, and develops them into top NFL prospects, that is a clear reflection on the quality of the football program.

Such is the case with UConn football.  Three UConn players – William Beatty, Darius Butler and Donald Brown are slated to be chosen in the first two rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft according to the National Football Post.  A fourth, Cody Brown, is also expected to be chosen early on Draft Day

Consider that since 1994 only six UConn players have been chosen in the Draft:

YEAR ROUND PICK PLAYER TEAM
2008 4 100 Tyvon Branch Raiders
2008 6 195 Donald Thomas Dolphins
2007 6 195 Deon Anderson Cowboys
2005 3 82 Alfred Fincher Saints
2005 5 145 Dan Orlovsky Lions
1994 6 190 Paul Duckworth Packers

As spring practice begins  for UConn, there should be no question that the program is on the rise.  Whether UConn will consistently send its players to the NFL remains to be seen.  But the NFL Draft class of 2009 is getting UConn off to a great start.
