I am an attorney at the Connecticut law firm of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C., practicing in the areas of sports law and litigation.
My practice includes providing counsel to student athletes concerning NCAA rules and regulations as well as matters involving colleges and universities. I often write about the drafting of coaching contracts and other legal issues affecting collegiate athletic departments. My articles have been featured in two of the leading publications on sports law, Legal Issues in Collegiate Athletics and Sports Litigation Alert.
In addition, I often provide legal insight concerning issues in the sports arena, such as discussing Michael Vick’s legal predicament on WDRC 1080’s “The Talk of Connecticut” with Dan Lovallo; Roger Clemens’ testimony before Congress in the Hartford Courant interview entitled ”Local Bar: Fitzgerald Provides His Opinion”; and the article “Laws favor teams in revoking ticket rights” appearing in Sports Business Journal.
I have been deeply involved in sports as a player, coach and an attorney. My passion for sports has grown into an interest in the business and legal issues inherent in most amateur, collegiate and professional athletics. As the sports industry continues to grow, legal issues will become more prevalent and examined more closely. I hope to outline these issues, especially as they pertain to Connecticut, and provide a source of information and a forum to discuss the prevailing issues of the day.
