Professional Football in Connecticut? UFL Targets Hartford

ufllrgThe United Football League (UFL) launched its new website (www.ufl-football.com).  According to the website, the UFL will begin play in the fall of 2009.  Although the league has yet to definitively name the locations of its first six teams, Hartford remains a target of the UFL.

Hartford is listed under “Potential Markets” on the UFL’s website, which lists also lists New York, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Monterrey, Mexico as potential sites.  Furthermore, Rentschler Field and the Yale Bowl are listed as possible venues for the prospective Connecticut team.

Although Northland Investment Corp. has been mentioned as the financial backer of the Hartford team, information has been scarce.  In fact, most of the news regarding the UFL’s presence in Hartford appears to be generated by the UFL itself.  The dearth of information concerning the viability of the league and location of a team in Hartford is reason for concern.  However, Connecticut’s support of UConn athletics, the NHL’s Whalers and the AHL’s Wolfpack does indicate that the State may provide a good home to a UFL team.
